Reasonable after sunset on one of the first tender nights of jump, Richard Reynolds parked his hatchback close at hand a traffic plane figure in the London vicinity of Hoxton. Tied to his cover were a potted woodbine and a dozen box fence plants, spilling out of offal bags. Trays of shimmering white Paris daisies filled the stalk, and cartons of many-colored ivy were wedged in the itinerant seat. Hipsters drank indifferently surface a nearby pub.

The car was whip and spur unstuffed. Pretty soon Reynolds and five accomplices were over a brief black palings and onto a small, mucky crescent of earth at a bend in the footpath. They were ankle-down-reaching in food wrappers and beer bottles and the spindly overgrowth of a gruff bush that Reynolds — tendency over, wearing act gloves and heaven-kissing black caoutchouc boots — started clipping fervidly.

“The vexed question is, it got too leggy,” he related. “This is the loving of plant that necessarily to be thinned every year, otherwise it becomes a scraggly dish.” The dwarf-tree along the rear wall was in fine produce, however, and Reynolds imagined it could be pruned and incorporated into their new garden. “That’s a buddleja. A buddleja davidii. Its belonging to all name is a butterfly shrub,” he explained. (He takes a gardening course one day a week in Director’s Park.) “It has herculean, very pendulous blooms.”

Reynolds is 30, drawn out-limbed and willowy, with a floppy amass of dark curls. For the next several hours, as he and his gangs reclaimed this missing crumb of London, family — in one's teens and old, lucid and inebriated — would interruption on the sidewalk to gaze or cheer them on.
